BELL RUNG: Schurr Had No Answer for Joe Bell and La Cañada

La Cañada QB Joe Bell set the tone Friday night as the Spartans rolled past Schurr, 42–7.

La Cañada wasted no time taking control, exploding for 28 first-quarter points and building a 28–7 lead after the opening period. Bell opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass and later added another scoring strike as the Spartans put Schurr on its heels almost immediately.

The statistical matchup coming in also showed the offensive gap between the teams. La Cañada was averaging 315.2 total yards per game, compared with 117.0 for Schurr — a difference of 198.2 yards per game. La Cañada also entered averaging 166.8 rushing yards and 148.4 passing yards per game.

After the opening-quarter barrage, La Cañada’s defense kept Schurr off the scoreboard the rest of the night while the offense added touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to finish off the 42–7 victory.

The 42 points marked La Cañada’s season-high scoring output, while the win extended the Spartans’ home winning streak to nine straight games dating to last season.

La Cañada improves to 5–1 and will open play in the new SGV Arroyo League at home against Muir on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

SIDELINE NOTE: With both teams named the Spartans, things got a little confusing early. During a timeout, I jokingly asked the officials if they could make sure the school name was included whenever a penalty was announced. Hearing, “Holding, Spartans,” naturally led to the question: Which Spartans?

I was working from the opposite end of the press box from where the referee points toward the penalized team, so the visual signal was easy to miss through the players. One official joked that maybe he needed a custom signal — a spear for one Spartans team and a sheild for the other. =)
