Herrera’s Complete-Game Shutout Sends Oxnard to CIF-SS Division 4 Final

Oxnard needed one more out, and sophomore Destinee Herrera delivered.

With Monrovia threatening in the final inning, the tying run on third and the potential game-winning run on first, Herrera stood in the circle with Oxnard’s championship hopes hanging in the balance. She finished the job, recording the final out to seal a 1-0 complete-game shutout over the Wildcats on Saturday in the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs.

The win sends the Yellowjackets to the Division 4 championship game and gives Oxnard its second straight one-run playoff victory. Herrera, ranked No. 13 in CIF-SS with a 1.20 ERA, allowed just three hits and kept Monrovia’s lineup off the scoreboard from start to finish. It was another clutch postseason performance from the sophomore pitcher, who gave Oxnard exactly what it needed on the road.

The Yellowjackets’ offense came from one swing in the fourth inning, and even that barely cleared. Junior Rachel Godoy drove a solo home run to center field that hit the top of the fence and bounced over, giving Oxnard the only run of the game. In a 1-0 playoff battle, it was the perfect symbol of how tight the margin was.

Oxnard will now face Mission Viejo, which defeated Burroughs 5-3 earlier Saturday, in the CIF-SS Division 4 championship final next weekend. The date and time are still to be announced.
